Honghi TranHonghi Tran wins TAPPI Gold Medal Award

ChemE prof and alum Honghi Tran (PhD 8T2) has won the Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award, presented by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. It is the highest honour that the association presents to an individual. Read full story.

ChemE undergrad wins Rhodes Scholarship

Stephanie Gaglione, who is majoring in chemical engineering at the University of Toronto, has been selected as a 2017 Rhodes Scholar, a prestigious annual scholarship to the University of Oxford. Gaglione, who loves to rock climb, run and canoe, celebrated by going out to dinner with friends and watching the new Harry Potter movie – but not before she finished working on an engineering design project to produce a chemical compound that could be used on a mission to Mars. New research consortium aims to build critical bridge between environmental and health data

Researchers Jeffrey Brook and Greg Evans use an aerosol mass spectrometer to analyse particulate air pollution. They are leading CANUE, a new pan-Canadian research consortium that aims to connect detailed environmental data with public health data to study the effects of exposure on Canadians’ health. Special Lecture on Fri, Dec 2

Dr. Alejandro Sosnik from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Technion City, Haifa, Israel will be giving a special lecture on Friday, December 2 starting at 11am in room 850 of the pharmacy building located at 144 College Street. His talk is entitled, Polymeric Micelles for Improved Oral HIV Therapeutics: The Dual Role of Nanocarrier and Inhibitor of Efflux Pumps.

REMINDER: CHE326 - Thermochemistry Laboratory Poster Sessions

Please join us in the Department's first ever CHE326 Poster Session. This year students will be given the opportunity to present their results in a poster format from one of the CHE326 laboratory experiments to professors, other faculty members and students. Sessions will be held on Tuesday, November 29 and Friday, December 2 (details listed below). The goal of these sessions is to provide students an opportunity to practice their presentation skills in an environment similar to what they would experience at a conference. Students will be judged on the design of their poster, as well as their presentation style/skills. Certificates will be awarded at the end of each session for the Best Poster. All are welcomed to attend either poster session. If you are interested in being a judge, please email jennifer.farmer@utoronto.ca at your earliest convenience.

  • Session 1 - Tuesday, November 29 from 10:30am-1pm
  • Session 2 - Friday, December 2 from 10:30am-12pm
  • Location - Wallberg building, second and third floor corridor in front of WB202/203 and WB302/303, respectively.

REMINDER: Bill Dowkes announces 500 for 50k Challenge

Devoted alumnus Bill Dowkes (ChemE 6T2) recently confirmed that he will provide the Department with $50,000 for ChemE student scholarships if we can generate 500 monetary gifts from alumni, staff and faculty by December 31, 2016. Today, our very own Chair Grant Allen donated $1,000 to the 500 for 50K Challenge! Thanks for taking us one step closer to unlocking $50,000. To learn more about the campaign, click here.
