Irving O. Shoichet Distinguished Lecture on Wed, Oct 19

This year's Iriving O. Shoichet Lecturer is Cato Laurencin from the University of Connecticut. He will giving a talk entitled, Regenerative Engineering: Convergence in Action. The talk will take place on Wednesday, October 19 in WB116 from 12-1pm.

Michael Sefton receives $1.1M from JDRF for type 1 diabetes research

Michael Sefton (ChemE, IBBME) has been presented with a major research award from international diabetes foundation JDRF to advance treatment research for type 1 diabetes (T1D). The funding, valued at approximately $1.1 million ($845,135 USD), supports a three-year study at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) to explore an experimental treatment that involves transplanting healthy pancreatic cells into patients living with the disease. Once successfully implanted, these cells can then produce insulin to help regulate blood glucose levels. Read full story.

ChemE students to compete in the Minerva-CIAC Case Study Competition finals on Mon, Oct 17

Four ChemE students - Katherine Dritsas, Andrew Kostruba, Kayla Musalem and Kenny Wei - placed in the top three for the written portion of the Minerva-CIAC Case Study Competition. They will compete in the finals (oral presentations) against École Polytechnique and the University of Waterloo on Monday, October 17 at the CSChE Conference in Quebec City. Congratulations and best of luck to our students!

Call for applications: 2017 Science Leadership Program

The Science Leadership Program (SLP) is "an amazing and transformational" 2+ day workshop designed to give faculty members the tools to effectively engage policymakers, the media, decision-makers, and the general public about their research. The workshop is directed by Molly Shoichet, Senior Advisor on Science and Engineering Engagement to President Gertler, University of Toronto, and is funded by Connaught Fund. It begins with a reception at 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 and ends with a group dinner on Friday, April 21, 2017. The Science Leadership Program is seeking academic scientists, engineers, and social scientists from U of T and other research-intensive Canadian universities to submit their application for consideration by October 31, 2016.

Mustard Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Institute for Work & Health is now accepting applications for the Mustard Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The deadline for submitting the applications is Friday November 18, 2016. For more information, click here.

Special talk on Mon, Oct 17

Katia Barbera from the European Research Institute of Catalysis (University of Messina, Messina, Italy) will be giving a talk entitled, Bridging the Gap Between Research and Application by Use of in situ and operando Vibrational Spectroscopies. The talk will take place on Monday, October 17 and starts at 10:30am in WB407.

Special talk on Wed, Oct 26

Hear Dr. Manfred Fischedick (VP at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and professor at the Schumpeter School of Business and Economics at the University of Wuppertal) talk about Germany's Energy Transition on Wednesday, October 26 from 4:30-5:30pm in UC161.

Acting Chair

Professor Tim Bender will be serving as Acting Chair on Monday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 18.

Looking to get rid of old books?

The Department is collecting old chemical engineering books to ship over to the University of the West Indies. If you have books that you'd like to contribute, please let Paul (paul.jowlabar@utoronto.ca) know and he will make arrangements with you for pick-up. Below are details regarding the collection:

  • Mostly used books, but new is ok too.
  • All text books must be at the undergraduate level.
  • Mostly chemical engineering books, but other related subjects welcome.
  • Books are for library purposes only. They will not be sold and/or given to individuals.
  • The Department will absorb the cost for shipping to port from Toronto to Trinidad.
  • We expect written acknowledgement from the Dean once the books have been received.

November Convocation

Registration for faculty and staff to participate in November's academic procession will run from October 11-24. The date and time for the ceremony is Monday, November 7 at 10am. If you are interested in participating in the procession, click here for more information. The Department will cover the cost of your regalia rental through expense reimbursement.
