ChemE Postdoc Receives Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship

BenoitBenoit Lessard, a postdoctoral fellow supervised by Professor Timothy Bender from the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at U of T, is a 2013 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship recipient.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program, administered through NSERC, provides $70,000 annually for two years to national and international postdoctoral applicants who positively contribute to the country’s economic, social and research-based growth. It is arguably the most prestigious postdoctoral fellowship available in Canada. Only 23 were distributed this year. Read more.

ChemE Students Win Hydrometallurgy Undergraduate Scholarship
Jonathan Leung (ChemE 1T3 + PEY) and Raphael Soldi (ChemE 1T3 + PEY) from Professor Vlad Papangelakis's Aqueous Process Engineering and Chemistry Group have won Hydrometallurgy Undergraduate Scholarships. The $2,500 awards are presented by the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgy & Materials Society of CIM.

WHMIS Refresher
Our annual WHMIS refresher session will be held on Monday, October 7 from 11am until noon in WB116. Only one in-person session will be held. The WHMIS refresher will be available online for those who cannot attend in person with an exam required at the end of the online session. This is a requirement for all personnel registered with or working in the Department and includes those registered with the Department but working elsewhere on or off campus. People who have successfully completed CHE2222 in 2013 are exempt. Attendance will be taken. It is important to attend the whole session as all information is important. Doors will be locked once the session begins at 11:10am. No exceptions. So please be prompt.

Friday Fridge Cleaning
If you have food in the fridge in WB214, please remove it before 11:30am on Friday, September 27. The fridge will be cleaned out at that time.

Special Lecture on Environmental Microbiology
You are invited to attend a guest speaker seminar hosted by Professor Elizabeth Edwards on Tuesday, October 1 starting at 4pm in WB407. The guest speaker, Dr. Lily Young, is a distinguished professor of environmental microbiology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Her seminar is entitled Anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation, the past and the future.

Stories of thriving Entrepreneurship
On Thursday, October 3 from 5-6pm in SF1105, Steven Lamb (EngSci 9T0) will discuss his experience as a successful serial entrepreneur. Steven is currently launching his fifth start-up. This talk will be followed by an informal dinner with the speaker. Please RSVP to susan.grant@utoronto.ca if you wish to attend the dinner. The dinner is free but space is limited. You do not need to RSVP to attend the talk.

Special Lecture on Catalytic Vehicle Emission Control
On Monday, October 7 starting at 2pm in WB215, Charles H.F. Peden from the Institute for Integrated Catalysis, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will be giving a talk entitled Future Challenges for Catalytic Vehicle Emission Control.
