Elements of bio-mining: Engineering collaboration aims to turn mine waste into valuable metals

An industry-academic collaboration - led by Professors Vlad Papangelakis and Elizabeth Edwards - is studying the use of microorganisms to treat mine waste in tailings ponds. The project hopes to extract valuable metals that could offset the cost of processing. Read full story.

REMINDER: Special lecture on Mon, Sept 25

Professor Mattheos Koffas from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will be giving a special lecture on Monday, September 25 from 10-11am in WB407. The talk is entitled, Sensitive cells: enabling tools for static and dynamic control of microbial metabolic pathways.

Kim Woodhouse

Kim WoodhouseProfessor Kim Woodhouse will be joining our Department as a visiting professor until June 30, 2018. She was a former professor in our Department with research interests in the biomedical engineering area. She moved to Queen’s University in 2007 to serve as Dean for its Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Professor Woodhouse just completed two five-year terms as Dean. She plans to spend most of her time here in Toronto working with Professor Susan McCahan focusing on engineering education. Her knowledge and experience is wide ranging including chemical engineering, bioengineering, education, administration and strategic planning, as well as significant industrial experience with Procter and Gamble after her undergraduate degree. Rodney Gensell

Rodney GensellThis week Rodney Gensell joined our main office team, as our new Departmental Administrative Assistant & Secretary of the Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Rodney has been with the University of Toronto for six years and brings with him diverse experience. He has worked as the Operations Coordinator at Ancillary Services overseeing campus food services and providing front-line support to students. Rodney also worked as the Welcome Desk Attendant for the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education providing support to students, faculty and staff, as well as responding to inquiries related to the registrar’s office. Prior to joining U of T, Rodney participated on health and safety committees for various hotels, restaurants and airlines. Rodney works out of WB217 and can be reached at rodney.gensell@utoronto.ca or 416-978-3063.
