ChemE Professor Wins 2014 Syncrude Canada Innovation Award

MahadevanCongratulations to ChemE Professor Radhakrishnan Mahadevan! He is the recipient of this year's Syncrude Canada Innovation Award, presented by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering. The award recognizes an individual under the age of 40 for a distinguished contribution to the field of chemical engineering while working in Canada. Professor Mahadevan's innovative work in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology and bioinformatics is internationally recognized.

2014-15 Connaught Program Application Deadlines

Connaught Summer Institute – deadline: October 1, 2014
Normally, one new award (up to $50,000) will be made to bring together international graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other scholars in order to foster rich interdivisional collaboration and creative new methods for research and innovation.

Connaught Cross-Divisional/Cross-Cultural Seminars – deadline: October 1, 2014
Approximately $150,000 for one award to interconnect fields of research in comparative historical and cultural sources in order to explore diverse societies. The seminars will draw on the wide-ranging expertise of the University of Toronto’s faculty and the rich cosmopolitan nature of the city of Toronto.

Connaught Innovation Award – deadlines: (NOI) September 15, 2014; (Full Proposal) October 15, 2014
Approximately $750,000 allocated in 2014-15 for awards of up to $100,000 to accelerate the development of promising technology and promote commercialization and/or knowledge transfer.

Connaught Global Challenge Award – deadlines: (LOI) October 15, 2014; (Full Proposal) April 1, 2015
Approximately $1M to support one award that encompasses an International Symposium, a Distinguished Visiting Scholar and a Research Cluster. The successful proposal will bring together the University’s leading researchers from multiple disciplines with innovators and thought leaders from other sectors to heighten the University’s contribution to important issues facing society.

Connaught New Researcher Award – deadline: December 1, 2014
Up to $1,000,000 will be awarded in the 2014-15 academic year to help new tenure stream faculty members establish competitive research programs. A majority of the available funds will be allocated to awards of up to $10,000; and the remaining funds will be allocated to top-up a limited number of these awards to a maximum of $35,000. Top-up funding will be provided to the highest ranked proposals that also identify a specific need for the additional funding.

McLean Award– deadline: January 15, 2015
One $100,000 award annually to support an emerging research leader conducting basic research in physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, engineering sciences, and the theory and methods of statistics.
