ChemE Alumni Win 2015 OPE Awards

OPE 2015Two ChemE alumni received Ontario Professional Engineers (OPE) Awards in honour of their outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and their wider community. Awarded by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). Claire Kennedy (ChemE 8T9), pictured left, received the Citizenship Award. Jeanette Southwood (ChemE 8T6, MASc 8T8), pictured right, garnered the Engineering Excellence Medal. Read more.

New Associate Professor

The department has promoted Alison McGuigan to Associate Professor. Professor McGuigan's research interests include: tissue engineering, microfabrication, disease modeling, systems biology, 2D and 3D cell organization and self-assembly, cell migration, tissue patterning and boundaries, modelling tissue organization mechanisms, and in vitro drug screening tools.

Nanocomposites Seminar

On Friday, July 31 at 11am in WB215, Dr. Mauro Giorcelli, Politecnico di Torino (Italy), will describe the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the nanocomposite (NC), a key issue to obtain uniform and reproducible samples. He will also discuss the electrical characterization of the NCs in microwave frequency. Learn more.

NSERC IPS Program – Final Application Deadline

The School of Graduate Studies has been informed that the NSERC IPS Program will be discontinued following the fulfillment of its current commitments, and will be replaced by the Mitacs’ Accelerate program. As a result, new NSERC IPS applications will only be accepted until the end of this summer.

In order to ensure that the final NSERC IPS submission deadline is met, the deadline for submitting NSERC IPS applications to the SGS Graduate Awards Office is Friday, August 21. The NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) Application Package is downloadable from the SGS website. For more information on the NSERC IPS program, please visit SGS’s NSERC IPS web page. Elizabeth Edwards and Brent Sleep in the Departments of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry and Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic team comprised of engineering and science students, staff and professors involved in groundwater remediation with a particular emphasis on tracking biological transformation reactions in groundwater associated with various cleanup approaches.
