Welcome Jennifer Farmer

jennifer farmerDr. Jennifer Farmer is thrilled to join the Department as an Assistant Professor (teaching-stream) and is looking forward to the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

Jennifer received her PhD in Chemistry from York University where her research focused in the area of Palladium Catalysis. After obtaining her PhD, she continued at York University as a postdoctoral researcher working on a medicinal chemistry project aimed at developing a lead compound for antibacterial resistance against undecarprenyl diphosphate synthase. During this time, she also taught a medicinal chemistry course to third-year Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry undergraduate students.

During her PhD program, Jennifer was also heavily involved with various organizations in the York community, serving as Vice-President Campaigns of the York University Graduate Students’ Association and Vice-President of the York Graduate Management Consulting Association, which she also co-founded. Additionally, Jennifer was a Senior Teaching Assistant for the Teaching Commons at York University, where she facilitated workshops and served as a mentor to Chemistry graduate Teaching Assistants.

Congratulations Tim Bender, Krishna Mahadevan and Emma Master

On behalf of the Department, congratulations to Tim Bender, Krishna Mahadevan and Emma Master on their recent promotions to full Professors.

Special Seminar on Wed, July 13

On Wednesday, July 13 from 3-4pm in WB407, Dr. Carolina Font Palma, a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Chester, will be giving a presenation as part of the SOCAAR Seminar Series. Her talk is entitled, Britain’s path towards carbon capture and storage.

Alumnus helps design programmable RNA vaccines

omar khanOmar Khan (ChemE 0T4, MASc 0T8, PhD 1T1) is part of a team of engineers at MIT who have developed a new type of easily customizable vaccine that can be manufactured in one week, allowing it to be rapidly deployed in response to disease outbreaks. So far, they have designed vaccines against Ebola, H1N1 influenza, and Toxoplasma gondii (a relative of the parasite that causes malaria), which were 100 percent effective in tests in mice.
