July 1, 2017

Many exciting occasions are happening on July 1, 2017:

  • Dr. Ariel Chan will be joining our Department as an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream.
  • Professors Cathy Chin and Arun Ramchandran will be promoted to Associate Professors with tenure.
  • Professor Krishna Mahadevan will be taking over the post of Associate Chair, Graduate Studies.
  • Professor Milica Radisic will be stepping into the position of Associate Chair, Research.

Ontario researchers to study dust for carcinogens after Fort McMurray fire

A group of Ontario researchers, led by Assistant Professor Arthur Chan, is travelling to Fort McMurray, Alta., next month to study dust left in homes from the forest fire that ravaged the city last year. Professor Chan said his team has received overwhelming interest from “concerned” homeowners in Fort McMurray who are offering up their places to be tested. Read full story from CBC News.

Graeme Norval talks safe chemical transportation with CBC

For the first time, Londoners are getting a glimpse into the dangerous goods passing through the city almost daily on the country’s two major railways. A list of the top ten hazardous materials shipped through the municipality on Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) trains was provided by the companies to the City of London at the start of June 2017, in accordance with a law enacted following the Lac-Mégantic disaster. Welcome Vivian MacNeil

Vivian MacNeilPauline Martini, our Graduate Administrator, will be taking a secondment leave for a year. Her last day with the Department is today. Vivian MacNeil will be filling in until July 14, 2017 while the Department looks to fill Pauline's position. Vivian recently graduated from U of T on June 7, 2017 with distinction for her B.A. Please help us welcome Vivian who will be working out of WB216C.

Congratulations Jeanette Southwood

Jeanette Southwood (ChemE 8T6, MASc 8T8), a member of our ChemE Board of Advisors, recently received an Honorary Degree from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (OUIT). An award-winning engineer and leader, Jeanette is Vice-President, Strategy & Partnerships, at Engineers Canada, the national organization of the 12 engineering regulators that license Canada's more than 290,000 members of the engineering profession where she leads the team focusing on the future of the profession.
