Lights on for OLED Research

LEDCongratulations to ChemE Postdoctoral Fellow Andrew Paton who is part of Professor Tim Bender's research group. Andrew has received one of this year's Heffernan Commercialization Fellowships for his innovative work on improving the energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of LED lights and solar cells using organic semi-conductors. The fellowship program supports students whose work holds promise for commercialization, and provides financial support and mentorship to help them develop their ideas into viable businesses. ChemE Student Presentation's a Winner

Congratulations to George Kolliopoulos, a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Vladimiros Papangelakis, for receiving the Best Student Presentation Award at the 24th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Thermal Analysis Society, May 6-7, 2014, in Mississauga, ON. The winning presentation was entitled "Temperature Effect on the Decomposition of Ammonium Carbonate - A Possible Draw Agent for Forward Osmosis Application,” and was co-authored by George Kolliopoulos, Raphael Soldi Giribaldi, and V.G. Papangelakis. Congratulations, George!

India-Canada Water for Health Joint Call for Collaborative Research Innovation Proposals

The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India (DBT) and IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence (IC-IMPACTS) of Canada will jointly fund Indian-Canadian research and innovation collaborations.

Research can be focused on any of the following areas:

  • Monitoring and management of water borne or water related diseases using mobile or networked health technologies;
  • Waste water treatment and impacts on water quality;
  • Water purification biotechnologies;
  • Heavy metals identification using biosensors; and,
  • Sustainable waste-water infrastructure and management using biotechnologies.

Each project application must consist of a Canadian and Indian applicant (Principal Investigators) who together have developed a join project proposal and project budget.

A 1-2 page letter of intent is required, including a budget.  For more information please visit the Research and Innovation website.

Convocation Reception: Faculty & Staff Registration Closes Next Week

Chem Eng 8-Ball Shootout

CEGSA is hosting the 1st ever Chem Eng 8-Ball Shootout at the Annex Billiards Club (507 Bloor St W) on Wednesday, June 11. Our very own Master's student Sam Huang is one of the top players in the city, and will give a brief lesson on the basics of pool. Check out Sam's amazing skills in his YouTube video! Sam's lesson will start at 5:30 pm, the tournament will start around 6pm.

All skill levels are welcome and there is no cost to play in the tournament; however, a $5 deposit is required and will be returned to you at the event. There will be prizes (details coming soon)! To register, email Sam at xianmenghuang@gmail.com with your name, email and phone number, and your partner's name, if you have one. Once registered, please find Sam in WB321 and give him the $5 deposit.

Engineering Pride & Diversity Panel and Reception

On the occassion of World Pride 2014, which is being hosted by the City of Toronto in June, the U of T Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering is hosting the Engineering Pride & Diversity Panel and Reception on Wednesday, June 25, 5:30pm - 8:30pm. This first-of-its-kind event will focus on LGBTQ experiences in the engineering profession and will be moderated by alumnus Paul Cadario, U of T Distinguished Senior Fellow in Global Engineering. Panel members include professors, distinguished alumni and current students. Registration is required, visit the event site to register.

Calling All Photographers

U of T Magazine is looking for submissions to its 2014 Photo Contest. First place winners have their photos published in the magazine and take away $500 and a U of T pack. Students, faculty, alumni, donors and most staff are eligible to enter. Submission deadline is Friday, July 11. Visit the contest website for more info.

CEGSA Softball

Softball season is just around the corner! Last year CEGSA has an excellent season. Join them again this year for another great summer enjoying the weather while playing softball outdoors. No experience required! All graduate students, staff, professors, and postdocs are welcome. The cost is $5 per person.
