Rodo_LLab Safety Project Wins Big

Safety first! It’s a common refrain in research labs around the world, yet accidents stubbornly continue to happen – sometimes with deadly consequences. That’s why fourth-year student Larissa Rodo (ChemE 1T3 + PEY) designed a new tool that helps academic researchers overcome the human tendency to underestimate risk.

With a focus on fostering safety-conscious work cultures, Rodo’s tool recently won second prize in the 2014 Minerva Canada James Ham Safe Design Engineering Student Awards contest – an award named after James Ham, a former electrical engineering chair, U of T Engineering dean and U of T president. Read more about Larissa's project.

Outstanding Energy Paper Winners

The Institute for Sustainable Energy has announced the winners of the 2013 Outstanding Paper Awards. ChemE PhD Student Peter Schnurr and Professor Grant Allen were among the recipients for their paper Algae biofilm growth and the potential to stimulate lipid accumulation through nutrient starvation, as was Professor Bradley Saville who was co-author for Ethanol or bioelectricity? Life cycle assessment of lignocellulosic bioenergy use in light-duty vehicles. Congratulations to all! Read about all of the winners here.

New Innovative Education Projects

Two project led by ChemE Professors were recently funded through the Engineering Instructional Innovation Program (EIIP) for next year. Greg Evans is developing a resource kit to help professors incorporate teamwork in the classroom, and Doug Reeve and his team at ILead will premiere a new collection of case studies on ethical issues. Read interviews and learn more about these intiatives.

LOL: Laugh Out Lam

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) disease is a rare pulmonary disease that primarily attacks women. Professor Molly Shoichet is working to understand this disease better and find treatments for it. Watch this recent Global News video to learn more.
