Jeff BrookWelcome Prof. Jeffrey R. Brook

This month, Prof. Jeffrey R. Brook started a cross-appointment in ChemE and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health where he is now an Assistant Professor. For 15+ years, Prof. Brook has been a status/adjunct faculty member for both groups. Prof. Brook received his PhD from the University of Michigan and has had a 25+ year career as a research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. His research has covered a variety of air quality topics and he has contributed to a number of national and international scientific assessments supporting government priorities and policies. He has been involved in the research and student training within SOCAAR since its inception. Prof. Brook co-leads the Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence (AllerGen) program on Genes and Environment and leads the environmental exposure assessment component of a Canadian birth cohort, the Canadian Health Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study, examining the influence of environmental factors on children's health. Prof. Brook has now taken on the role of Scientific Director of a national consortium the Canadian Urban Environmental Health Research Consortium (canue.ca), which is funded by CIHR and is based at U of T (Dalla Lana School of Public Health).

Nida ShamsWelcome Nida Shams

Nida Shams recently joined the SOCAAR team as their Acting Administrative Assistant covering Natalie Leung's 18-month mat leave. Before joining SOCAAR, Nida was with Procurement Services and supported the UShop and uSOURCE systems, as well as the Purchasing Card Programs (MasterCard and Amex). She welcomes the opportunity to meet new people and generally keeps treats at her desk in WB123. Swing by and say hi!

Free tickets for the Green Chemistry and Engineering Symposium in May!

The Green Chemistry and Engineering Symposium titled Green by Design - Advances in Chemistry and Engineering will take place in the Bahen Centre from Wednesday, May 23 to Friday, May 25. The symposium is designed to connect students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty members interested in Green Chemistry & Engineering with current leaders in the field to discuss advances in chemical processes and industrial technology. Early bird registration is open now until Sunday, April 15. The cost is $40/ticket. The ticket covers all symposium events, coffee breaks, lunches and networking events. Click here to register. ChemE is sponsoring six GRAD STUDENT tickets. You can apply by sending a paragraph of why you want to attend the symposium to Jennifer Hsu at jennifer.hsu@utoronto.ca. Creating the perfect cup of coffee: U of T researchers team up with Toronto roaster to refine process

Andrew Paton, a ChemE PhD alumnus who was supervised by Prof. Tim Bender, is teaming up with coffee company Cut Coffee to figure out how to manipulate the roasting process to bring out specific flavours in coffee beans. Paton now works with U of T’s Impact Centre, an innovation hub that regularly partners with companies looking to conduct scientific research and access U of T’s wealth of resources and expertise. Chem Club + CSChE Fundraiser on Wed, Apr 11

On Wednesday, April 11 from 6-8pm in WB238 (undergrad common room), Chem Club and CSChE will be hosting a fundraiser to support the Ronald McDonald House on McCaul Street.
