Multi-disciplinary Students Take on Childhood Malnutrition

The Centre for Global Engineering, led by Professor Yu-Ling Cheng, recently brought together graduate students from across the university to tackle one of the most vexing problems in the developing world: the cycle of grinding poverty that keeps parents from being able to feed their children adequately. A team including ChemE PhD student Scott Genin proposed a new strategy to allow women to continue to breastfeed their children after returning to work, addressing malnutrition in the crucial early stages of life. Read more about their proposed Mother's Milk idea.

ChemE Undergrad Swimming Champs

Congratulations to first year student Ross Phillips and second year student Edward Liu, who are both competing at the 2014 Commonwealth/Pan Pacific swimming trials in Victoria on April 1 - 5. Edward is one of the top butterflyers in the country and recently won Gold in the 50m butterfly and Bronze in the 100m butterfly and 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2014 CIS National Swimming Championships in Toronto. Ross specializes in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and was part of the U of T (M) team that placed 1st out of 11 Ontario universities at the 2014 Ontario University Athletics championships this past February. An impressive achievement, given their coarse load!

Women Engineers Connect

For the second year in a row, the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering asked women engineers to identify outstanding role models and mentors who have influenced their career and provided all-important guidance at the right moment. The resulting list of 30 exceptional women engineers includes nine FASE graduates and faculty members, including ChemE Associate Professor Milica Radisic and alumni Jessica Li (1T3), Rachelle McCann (1T3) and Marisa Sterling (9T1). They are profiled in #30in30, an online feature in celebration of National Engineering Month.

Inaugural Chemical Engineering Sector Information Night a Great Success

January 14 marked the successful debut of Chemical Engineering Sector Information Night. Sponsored by OSPE, ILead, CSChE, and Chem Club, the event aimed to help students choose career paths. Current undergraduates Michael Taguiam (1T5), Lucy Liu (1T5), Krithika Sugavanam (1T6) and Sana Zafar (1T3+PEY) spearheaded the event with the supervision of Professor Doug Reeve and Professor Graeme Norval.

The information night attracted about 80 ChemE undergrads who heard from alumni working in nine different sectors, including: Carissa Sutjipto (Food), Ivan Gogolev (Oil & Gas), Abby Eldib (Proposal Engineering), Kristy Chow (Mining), Paul Earl (Pulp & Paper), Avishek Kar (Chemicals), Tony Tsui (Environment), Elizabeth Csaszar (Biomedical) and Irena Mahdavi (Finance). Each presenter shared valuable knowledge and experiences from their respective fields, giving students a snapshot of the many opportunities available to them upon graduation. Following on the success of this inaugural event, the executive team plans to offer it again years to come.
