ChemE students raise highest dollar amount for Graditude
This year our students raised $1,843 for the Graditude Campaign - achieving once again the highest departmental total. A Faculty donor will generously match this figure, and the Faculty - as a prize for achieving the highest dollar amount - will provide an additional $100. With that said, $3,786 will be going back to ChemE student clubs for the 2016-17 academic year. A big thank you to Professor Grant Allen who willing dyed his hair pink and Professor Graeme Norval for auctioning off personal items during the Iron Ring Party all for the Campaign.
Tailored protein binding opens possibilities for nerve, tissue treatments
Dr. Malgosia Pakulska and University Professor Molly Shoichet (ChemE, IBBME) have outlined the best techniques for discovering molecules that will bind to proteins with the potential to treat conditions from stroke to heart disease. Their review paper, Designer protein delivery: From natural to engineered affinity-controlled release systems, was recently published in the leading journal Science. Read full story.
Three smart solutions from the Institute for Water Innovations
Population growth, climate change and environmental degradation are intensifying pressures on global water supplies, hastening the need for innovations that will improve access to clean water for drinking, food production and sanitation. Researchers at U of T Engineering are leading the development of new technologies to improve water conservation, purification and reclamation both in Canada and around the world. The Institute for Water Innovation (IWI), which will be part of the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship when it opens in summer 2017, unites the expertise of more than a dozen engineering professors across multiple disciplines to tackle this key global challenge. Click here for three examples of innovative solutions engineered by IWI researchers, including Professors Ramin Farnood and Vlad Papangelakis.
Climbing for charity
Claire Kennedy (ChemE 8T9) has never held back when it comes to giving her time to both her alma mater and greater community, but this winter she reached new heights in her volunteerism. In January 2016, Kennedy, along with a team of 16 other Canadian business people and eight Canadian soldiers, travelled to Antarctica to climb the 4,892-metre-high peak of Mount Vinson as part of the True Patriot Love Foundation’s fundraising event to support military charities and research across Canada.
