Killam Prize Event in Toronto on Tue, Mar 6

Join the Canada Council for the Arts for this special anniversary event featuring acclaimed winners of the Killam Prize, including our very own Molly Shoichet. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 6 from 7:30-9pm at Innis Town Hall located at 2 Sussex Avenue. The event includes a reception. Admission is FREE. However, you must register here.

Pedro AlvarezLLE talk by 2017-18 AEESP Distinguished Lecturer on Wed, Mar 7

Pedro Alvarez from Rice University is the 2017-18 AEESP Distinguished Lecturer. He will be giving the next LLE talk on Wednesday, March 7 from 12-1pm in WB116. His talk is entitled, Proliferation and control of multidrug-resistant “superbugs” in sewage treatment plants.

SOCAAR Seminar on Wed, Mar 7

Postdoctoral Intern Nicolas Groulx from the Department of Microbiology & Division of Infectious Diseases, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Research Institute, University of Toronto will be giving a talk entitled, Airborne interactions between viruses and PM2.5 as an unexplored modifier of viral viability. The talk is part of the SOCAAR Seminar Series and will take place on Wednesday, March 7 from 3-4pm in WB407.

Engineering Leadership Research Seminar on Wed, Mar 7

The Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering (ILead) will be hosting Dr. Erin A. Cech on Wednesday, March 7. She will be giving a special talk entitled, Professional culture and inequality in engineering. The talk will take place in GB202 from 11am to 12pm.

  • Marisa Sterling (ChemE 9T1) is the new VP of PEO and Keivan Torabi (ChemE MASc 9T9, PhD 0T5) was elected PEO representative for the East Central Region.
  • Royal Dutch Shell is preparing to appoint Colin Crooks (ChemE 8T7, MASc 8T8) as chief executive of First Utility when its deal for Britain’s largest independent household energy supplier is completed. Read more here.

Ignite, Imagine, Innovate: U of T Engineering hosts NSBE Conference

Trojan Technologies looking to hire a grad student

Trojan Technologies is looking for a graduate student for a four month MITACS project, Control/sequestration of sulfide in the sewer line. Interested student will be involved in lab/bench tests but not limited to:

  • Preparation and characterization of Fe(II) solution/slurry using commercially available reagents,
  • Investigate the effect of reagent pH on the final product,
  • Characterize the above product,
  • Use the product to control/sequester sulfide in primary effluent,
  • Compare the efficacy and efficiency of the product with commercially available Fe(II).

MSc and PhD opportunities

The Hydrometallurgy and Environment Group at Queen’s University has several immediate positions for Ph.D. and Master’s students. Sponsored by the largest Canadian and International Mining Companies, the research projects will focus on the bacterial extraction of gold from gold ores, as well as design and engineering of novel reagents for gold extraction. The projects are interdisciplinary as those include the chemical and electrochemical processing, bioreaction studies, kinetics and thermodynamics studies, etc. Positions to start May or September 2018.
