Recap: Industry Open House 2016

They came seeking solutions: industry partners in fields from plastics to finance gathered at the third annual Industry Open House, hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry on Friday, February 19, 2016. More than 60 industry and government representatives flocked to the University of Toronto’s Hart House to strengthen existing partnerships or forge new ones. The day-long event kicked off with a personal meet-and-greet breakfast session with faculty, followed by a panel discussion on the topic of translating academic research to commercial success. Lab-grown Heart Cells to Improve Drug Safety

Under a microscope at U of T Engineering, heart cells are pulsing together in a petri dish. For Professor Milica Radisic and her team, it’s just another day in the lab. Although they are grown outside the body, the human tissues engineered in Radisic’s lab look and behave just like the real thing. Now, thanks to a new startup company co-founded by Radisic, they are helping drug companies test their products for dangerous side effects. For the full story, click here.

HEQCO’s New Study Based on U of T Project

The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario recently published a new study entitled, Structured feedback program helps students improve teamwork and collaboration skills. The study examined an initiative at the University of Toronto – spearheaded by Professors Greg Evans and Doug Reeve, and their colleague Patricia Sheridan from the ILead team – that used a structured online feedback tool to help students in a large first-year engineering class self-assess and receive peer assessments on their teamwork skills. The study found that the tool was effective at helping students understand their strengths and weaknesses, as opposed to open, unstructured feedback opportunities, which often only highlight what a student already does well.
