Graditude 2019 kicks off!

From L to R: Rosten Role (CSChE), Fletcher Han (ALChemE), Jeff Dryden (Chem Club) and Thomas Mazzonna (Chem Club)
Last year, ChemE students raised $1,744 (highest departmental amount across the Faculty). The funds have gone directly back into our student clubs. The 2019 Graditude Campaign has officially commenced. Lets help our students raise even more money this year! To learn more about the campaign and how to give, click here. The Campaign ends on Sunday, March 3.

Team led by Milica Radisic designs ‘training gym’ for lab-grown heart cells
Heart muscle cells need exercise — even when they grow outside the human body. A new device designed by U of T Engineering researchers, led by Prof. Milica Radisic, uses a rigorous training regimen to grow small amounts of cardiac tissue and measure how strongly it beats. The platform is ideal for testing the effects of potential drug molecules, and could help bring personalized medicine closer to reality. Read more.
OCCAM researchers apply modern surface spectroscopies to the study of ancient artifacts in unique cross-disciplinary collaboration
Advances in Engineering is now featuring the collaborative research between OCACAM Researchers Rana Sodhi, Peter Brodersen and Sal Boccia, and Queen’s University Professors Amandina Anastassiades and Cristiana Zaccagnino. Using a combination of specialized surface analytical methods, namely, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in conjunction with energy dispersive Xray analysis (EDX), the group managed to obtain ample information results from the selected sample of ancient coins while minimizing the inevitable amount of damage, which would occur if destructive analysis was performed.
