Jane HoweWelcome Jane Howe

Jane Howe is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry. Prior to her new position at U of T, Prof. Howe worked as a Senior Applications Scientist with Hitachi High-Technologies group in US and Canada for the past five years. She received her PhD in Ceramic Science from Alfred University in 2001. After a postdoc at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Prof. Howe stayed at ORNL as a Staff Scientist and Principal Investigator until 2012.  She has over 100 publications on peer-reviewed journals and holds nine US patents on electron microscopy and materials characterization and development. She won two R&D 100 Awards in research and development of the lithium battery technology and nano-structured carbon materials. Prof. Howe's current research interest is in situ and correlative microscopy techniques. Please help us welcome Prof. Howe to ChemE. She can be found in WB172B and reached at jane.howe@utoronto.ca.

Levente Diosady named to Order of Canada

Prof. Levente Diosady has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the science of food engineering, which has improved the lives of millions of people around the world. Read more.

UPDATE: Associate Chair, Research

Prof. Emma Master will serve as Associate Chair, Research until the end of June 2019 while Prof. Milica Radisic is on Research Leave.

Study Reveals Fort McMurray Homes Have Normal Levels of Indoor Toxins in Aftermath of Devastating Wildfire

U of T Engineering researchers (led by Prof. Arthur Chan) have examined dust from homes in Fort McMurray, Alta., for evidence of harmful toxins left in the aftermath of the devastating 2016 wildfire. Their study reveals normal levels of contaminants that are comparable to homes across Canada, and so far, no evidence of long-term health risks from fire-ash exposure in residents’ homes. Read more.

AmacaThera Secures $3.25 in Seed Financing to Develop Non-Opioid Pain Control Therapeutic

AmacaThera, a Toronto-based company founded by Prof. Molly Shoichet that commercializes hydrogel-based drug delivery platforms, has raised $3.25 million CAD in seed financing from Sprout BioVentures, Viva Biotech, and Grey Sky Venture Partners. Read more.
